Been pretty busy lately with video game dev but with this wordpress iPhone app I can update a bit easier. Still no real streaming on the iPhone 3g (rtsp) but we are getting some good quality playback from some of our initial tests.

5 Minute Video Site added to our mobile video site

TWiT – this WEEK in TECH for your iPhone

I just wanted to let everyone know we added “this WEEK in TECH” to our iPhone version of mvstreamer.mobi. I had a few email communications with Leo Laporte and asked him If I could add his weekly audio podcast to our line up of shows on our site.

After a few exchanges of emails Leo gave us the go ahead and now you can list to “this WEEK in TECH” if you point your iPhone to http://mvstreamer.mobi and select the audio section. Leo Also mentioned that you can also listen to the feed on TWiT.TV as well.

Just a small update for this week, we are working on some more advanced features for both the mobile phone and iPhone versions of mvstreamer.mobi, keep you eye out and spread the word.

Stream Podcasts to your iPhone.

Ok everyone over the holidays I decided to work on a iPhone version of Mvstreamer.mobi, you can now stream podcasts such as diggnation, ask a ninja, tiki bar, pete tong and many more podcasts to your iPhone. This works best over Wifi and while EDGE does work at times its really slow and can take a while to load. Until the iPhone hops on the 3g bandwagon your pretty much limited to sub par video streaming how ever we have done our best to optimize the video as best as possible, while not the greatest we found that it does work.

Point your iPhone over to http://mvstreamer.mobi and your phone should be detected and display the iPhone streaming version. Please note this is in beta and we are still working on a few bugs. We always welcome feedback and if their is a podcast show you would like us to add to the system feel free to drop us a line.

Happy iPhone Podcast streaming well over Wifi for now, but if your patient you can go to the EDGE

Tekzilla added to mvstreamer.mobi

While working on my side video projects to get shows streaming on most phones with a semi decent 3g connection, we have added most of revision 3 shows and the new show Tekzilla.

Info about the show:

We are also working on our iPhone streaming system and if any php or perl programmers can help donate some programming time it would be greatly appreciated.

iPhone video streaming a no go currently.

After doing many tests with my buddy who has an iPhone I was unable to get any sort of streaming working via the Safari browser.

I have encoded and tested the following:

mpeg4 + aac (hinted non hinted)

doesn’t work via DSS or direct html link Safari doesn’t understand RTSP and http:// linked videos it wants to load into memory.

h264 + aac (hinted non hinted)

doesn’t work via DSS or direct html link Safari doesn’t understand RTSP and http:// linked videos it wants to load into memory.

Asking my buddy to visit m.youtube.com via safari and test a video from the page also doesn’t work for him either.

Error: safari can’t open the page because the address is invalid

So, unless you can develop your own custom application like the youtube one right now looks like we are out of luck.

User Agent String for iPhone is:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3

If anyone comes up with a solution I would love to hear it.

FFmpeg changes

As of late the SVN builds of ffmpeg have been changing the configuration args to compile ffmpeg and encoding options after the software is compiled. I wanted to befiely mention the changes I have noticed.

My original compile options for ffmpeg : --extra-cflags=-I/usr/local/include --extra-ldflags=-L/usr/local/lib --disable-debug --enable-mp3lame --enable-libogg --enable-vorbis --enable-faad --enable-faadbin --enable-faac --enable-pthreads --enable-xvid --enable-x264 --enable-a52 --enable-a52bin --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_nb-fixed --enable-amr_wb --enable-memalign-hack --enable-shared --enable-gpl

Things that have changed are the addition of adding “lib” do most everything.. So –enable-xvid will be –enable-libxvid. Most of these can be found by typing ./configuration –help

So this is just a fyi if you haven’t compiled ffmpeg in a while to prob add “lib” to most everything

The next changes have to do when encoding video and most of them deal with changes in the audio switches.

changes:

old: -acodec amr_nb
new: -acodec libamr_nb

old: -ab 12
new: -ab 12.2k or various other options but all require “k” behind them.

old: -acodec aac
new: -acodec libfaac

hopefully this helps out and your not pulling your hair out or Googling around to find the changes cause well apprently their is no good change log with this type of information.

Wanted PHP/Perl Programmer to donate time.

With my busy schedule as of late and the lack of the ability to update,write code and make enhancements I’m looking for someone to help donate their coding skills to further my work in mobile streaming. I would like to work with someone who has a great vision and can think/code outside of the box. The ultimate goal is to release alot of my work to the public but for now I want to get things stable enough before doing so. So if you have some extra time and are good at php/mysql/perl please drop me a note in the contact form.

Unofficial Revision 3 public beta

I just wanted to open up something I have been working on in on the side and that is taking the content from Revision 3 and converting it to mobile phones for streaming play back. I’m now opening this up to the public to test and provide feedback. Over the past few months I have been doing a lot of testing and getting a lot of great feedback on mobile streaming.

So now I feel like I can share some of my work to the public and Revision 3 is a prefect site that offers great shows for both web and iPod playback. I felt that they were missing a mobile version of their site so decided to tackle that project which fit right into the things I was working on.

I would love to get your feedback on how the system works for you and any tweaks or suggestions you have that I could implement. Keep in mind I’m not doing this for people who are on slow mobile networks because after a lot of testing I found that the video quality is so bad on those slow networks that its not worth bringing such quality content to the phone. Please don’t get me wrong I really made an effort to see if things could work but after much disappointment’s of video quality I decided to not work with the slower networks and focus my efforts on 3g type networks. The choice was made really clear to me after seeing a 5 frame per second video that looks like a bunch of square blocks and you could barely make out the video and sound. I’m sure you guys would agree with my choice.

When playing around with this site and watching videos I would first recommend that you go to the test my phone page and test which video types playback on your phone. This page was built to give you a good idea of what your phone can play and which format looks and sounds better on your hand set. Keep in mind not all phones can play all formats which is normal and you might just be stuck with H2.63 and AMR.

I’m also looking for donations such as server bandwidth,servers , php/perl programming or any financial help since this whole project (servers and bandwidth) currently comes out of my pocket.

Pocket PC (windows mobile users) , Windows Media Player on the PPC doesn’t stream 3gp, so you will need to install Platform4 Player.

One last thing, Help support Revision 3 as well since they seem to be a great group of people also pushing to do something different on the net.
